Startup Central Victoria hosted a Showcase Celebration in Bendigo on 6 September to celebrate the conclusion of a highly successful Pre-Accelerator program.
30 teams comprising 39 individuals from ten local government areas participated, including three from Mount Alexander. Over 13 weeks they explored a startup idea during a program of masterclasses delivered by business professionals and supported by mentors. Funding was provided by LaunchVic with strong pro-bono support from within the region.
This is the fourth year that a program has been offered in the region. The majority of this year’s teams indicated that they had progressed their idea significantly during the program.
During the Showcase hosted by futurist Steve Sammartino, two startups were launched, eight showcased their services and products, and two pitched for investment to an appreciative audience.
Virtual CC, a Harcourt-based startup, gained its first client enquiry at the Showcase. Paul Mizzi has created a solution to make call centres more relatable to Australian customers.
“The program has been a plethora of 'eureka' moments,” said Culum Revell from Castlemaine who has founded Daedulux, a drone service.
Sam Haliday, also from Castlemaine, used the program to validate his invention of a new tool for cabinet makers. “I’ve learnt not to be afraid to ask for help,” he said, “it’s now full steam ahead.”
Program Manager, Kerry Anderson, paid tribute to the masterclass presenters, speakers and mentors who provided their time pro-bono. “There is so much business talent and experience right here in regional Victoria. Over the past four years we have built up an ecosystem that will support startups and scale ups long into the future.”
For those interested in exploring a startup idea or wanting to scale up their existing business, there are free events and online meetups held each month featuring businesspeople sharing real life experiences.

We love our main streets: great for shopping and the inevitable catch up! Support your community by supporting small businesses.Main streets and town centres are economic powerhouses, driving job creation, revenue generation, and small business success. Here are just some of the many ways that they drive positive impact for our local economies:
💼 Job Creation and Employment: According to the International Downtown Association, downtown areas, including main streets and high streets, account for approximately 3% of the land area in a typical city but generate about 10% of all jobs.
📈 Revenue Generation: The National Main Street Centre reports that for every dollar invested in a Main Street program, on average, $27.00 in new private sector investment is generated.
🛍️ Small Business Support: Small businesses located in main street districts often see increased foot traffic and sales. For example, a study by the American Planning Association found that vibrant main streets can increase retail sales by up to 10%.
🧳 Tourism and Economic Vitality: In the UK, high streets contribute significantly to the economy. The British Retail Consortium notes that high streets account for nearly 50% of retail spending in the UK.
🌈 Accessibility, Diversity & Sustainability: Main streets are more accessible than any other type of precinct; more open to innovation in commercial activity, including startups; and more diverse in what they offer to visitors, businesses and the community. And, they often do this in an environmentally sustainable way.
🧘🏼 Civic Engagement and Well-being: The Knight Foundation's Soul of the Community study found that towns with vibrant main streets experience a 30% increase in civic engagement. Residents are more likely to participate in local activities, support community initiatives, and volunteer, all of which contribute to a higher quality of life.
Main streets have always been more than just a retail space. They are a place for residents and visitors to gather, meet, shop and be entertained; they are key service delivery points; and an important provider of jobs. These multifunctional and resilient centres have characteristically diverse businesses and settings, and serve as significant economic assets for local areas.
