What started out as a 35 acre paddock with only 15 trees & over 1500 rabbits back in 1991, has been transformed over the past 30 yrs into two symbiotic businesses. MillDuck Alpaca Stud enters alpacas at most of the big alpaca shows throughout Australia & has exported animals to Europe, UK & NZ. Breeding alpacas ties in nicely with running a B&B, especially when both partners stick to their separate areas of interest & expertise!
While Prue is focussed on improving the genetics of alpacas, Ada is concerned with the comfort of guests who stay in the two, fully self-contained, straw bale units they had built on the property in 2000, along with the house. Both being interested in sustainable building & passive solar design, they decided to engage an architect who introduced them to straw bale construction.
MillDuck Strawbale B&B is nestled snugly within Harcourt’s rolling granite hills, with breathtaking views of the Sedgwick ranges. It’s centrality to Castlemaine, Maldon & Bendigo, makes exploring these tourist towns very accessible for guests. The 2 units, created for couples, give privacy & independence – guests cook their own breakfast from the generous provisions … bacon, free range eggs, fruit, cereal, real coffee and more is all included in the tariff.
Wood fires in the units enable guests to watch the flames while relaxing in the large spa. Alternatively, they may choose to wander through the gardens, up to the lookout or, if feeling sedentary, relax on the deck chairs with a good book, overlooking the dam. Picnic in the paddock with the alpacas … it’s all part of leaving the stress of your ‘other life’ behind, it’s about spoiling yourself while at MillDuck.
Followers of ‘Grand Designs’ are in their element! MillDuck Reviews on Trip Advisor testify to guests’ appreciation of the straw bale construction, quality finish & peaceful and cosy atmosphere of their straw bale unit. That, plus the old world, rustic charm spread throughout the property, means many guests wish they could stay longer.
Strawbale house tours are available, with participants learning, among other things, about passive solar design. Guests find it beneficial as they are often in the initial stages of building their own grand design. Most guests do take advantage of the late noon checkout, a must when you’re truly feeling relaxed.
MillDuck StrawBale B&B is ‘far from the madding crowd’ where guests experience a unique piece of heaven. Get in touch with Ada and Prue to find out more:
